TWC awards TSC $90K for summer camps

summer-campThe Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) awarded Texas Southmost College (TSC) a $90,000 Governor's Summer Merit Program grant to provide summer youth camps that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The grant will provide high school age students the opportunity to attend camps that will prepare them for future high-skill, high-demand jobs.

"TSC's Summer Camps will give high school students opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM-related activities on a college campus, in college science labs and with college faculty," TSC Division of College Preparatory Studies / STEM Dean Angelica Fuentes said. "Thanks to the $90,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission's Governor's Summer Merit Program, students can participate in camps at no cost to them. The camp's activities are designed to encourage students to attend college and pursue a STEM-related college degree."

TSC will offer five summer camps: Closing the GAPS (Girls Aren't Pursuing Science): A Summer Institute to Foster Women Scientists and Engineers (two camps), Anatomy and Physiology, Science of Mechanical Applications and Related Technology, and a Neuroscience Institute. The camps begin in June and deadline to apply is May 19, 2017.

The summer camps will include a rich curriculum of lectures, labs, field trips to local industries and healthcare facilities, and hands-on activities that promote collaboration in an engaging and stimulating environment.

For more information about the summer camps, call (956) 295-3375 or visit www.tsc.edu.
